Project Overview
"Botani Quest" is an educational, web-based (PC) pixel-art platformer designed to facilitate foundational biology learning (specifically plant anatomy) for 4th-grade students. The core challenge of this project was transforming scientific concepts—typically consumed passively from textbooks—into an engaging, interactive exploration. Through a game-based learning approach, this project successfully merges instructional objectives with fun and challenging gameplay mechanics.
1. Strategic Objectives
The main goal was to increase student motivation and memory retention regarding plant biology through active participation. Key strategic objectives included:
- Drive Active Learning: Shifting the student's role from a passive listener to an active explorer who must interact with the learning environment to solve problems.
- Enhance Retention Through Play: Leveraging in-game reward systems and level progression so that the functions and parts of plants are memorized naturally.
- Create a Stress-Free Learning Environment: Reducing academic anxiety by providing a "safe space" where children can make mistakes (such as failing a jump or answering incorrectly) and try again without fear of penalty.
2. Instructional Design & Game Mechanics
To ensure the game was not only entertaining but also highly educational, I integrated several instructional design principles into the game's structure:
- Core Gameplay Integration: Educational content (e.g., understanding the functions of roots, stems, and leaves) is not merely tacked on; it is woven directly into the core gameplay loop. Players must interact with these concepts to advance to the next level.
- Immediate Feedback: Providing instant visual and auditory responses whenever a player collects an educational item, a psychological tactic proven to reinforce cognitive memory in young learners.
- Pixel-Art Visual Approach: Utilizing a 2D pixel-art aesthetic that is highly visually appealing and familiar to children, while also ensuring the game remains lightweight and runs smoothly via web browsers.
Summary of Gameplay Structure
The learning journey is designed to feel like an integral part of the player's adventure:
- Environmental Exploration (Platforming): Players navigate their character through various obstacles visually themed around nature, ecosystems, and botany.
- Knowledge Collection: Players gather specific objects throughout the levels that unlock bite-sized facts about plant functions.
- Integrated Cognitive Challenges: Features mechanics where players must apply their foundational biology knowledge to overcome specific hurdles or complete a learning stage.
